The Forest Allowance Program (Bolsa Floresta) is the first Brazilian program to reward traditional population for the maintanance of the environmental services provided by the tropical forests. Environmental services are the benefits provided by the standing forests, such as climate stability, rain maintanance, carbon storage in the trees and bidiversity conservation.
So far almost 7.000 families have been benefited by the program in 15 Conservation Units, which represents more than 10 million hectares of forest, an area bigger than Portugal.
