Juma´s project has turned FAS into an international example of REDD

After Juma experience, the Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS) has became an international example of success in Reducing Green House Emissions from Deforestation Novo Aripuanã municipality. The project is a partnership with Mariott International –a global hotel company. That´s the evaluation of one of the most important specialists on the subject, the general director of The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Ph.D. Daniel J.Zarin. “FAS is a real example with great theoretical aspects as well as practical that must be considered as one of the most important in the world when it comes to forests and people living inside them”, said the director.
Agreeing on those thoughts is the senior advisor Forests and Climate Change of the Germany technical cooperation, GTZ, Peter Saile who said that “the Foundation is proving to the world that is possible to provide concrete answers about conservation with social responsibility”.

Virgilio Viana, the general director of FAS has been considered in COP 14, at Poznan, one of the specialists most well prepared on clime changes by his experience on integrating environmental organizations, private companies, the United Stated and European Governments for the purpose of finding a solution to the problems and need of those who live inside the forests, specially within the 34 protected areas where FAS works on (covering an area of almost 17 million hectares). Today, FAS is the biggest foundation dealing with environmental services. “This international consideration is a result of intensive team work”, mentioned the director.

"I´ve come from the forest, in the Sustainable Development Reserve of Uacari, at the middle Jurua River. Everyone here in Poznan is supporting us in a way that I´ve never seen before. I´m very happy and strongly believe that FAS is the solution for many of the problems that we have to deal with inside the forest”, declared the president of the national rubber tapper council, Manoel Cunha.
Brice Lalonde, from the french embassy, pointed out that today Brazil is able to be in the leader position in the international agenda of climate changes decisions, when it comes to REDD and other projects focused on the forests because its capacity of developing respected projects.
This good scenario in the COP-14 became clearer through yesterdays presentation of Virgilio Viana in a press conference at Poznan, together with the advocate of the environmental and human issues, Bianca Jagger. Having had the opportunity to visit the community of Boa Frente, located inside the Sustainable Development Reserve of Juma, Jagger gave her statement on what shes´s seen. “I had no Idea that I would find such a happy community living inside the Forest, using Internet technology, living in dignity and respecting the nature around. I will do whatever it takes in order to share this experience that I had at Juma so that the whole world will be able to see what is being done by FAS”, said Bianca.
According to the general director of FAS, the success of all the projects is a result of the State Governor´s inniciative, Eduardo Braga, who has created the first Climate Change Law dealing with a global issue. Viana emphasized that the Amazonas State is being an worldwide example through the Juma REDD experience. “Our work at FAS is being discussed all over the world because we are finally giving answers for the problems that affect the people living inside the forests. This is, in fact, our role. Finding solutions through different partnerships as well as the Amazonas government”, finalized Viana.
